Anyone heard of a Dodge Omni GLHS? Check it out

So I walking through my local wrecking yard and I happen across this poor guy:

If you are not familiar with an Omni GLHS, google it. They are Carroll Shelby designed cars and were faster than Corvette and Mustang when they were built. They also built almost none of them. I have never actually seen one in person until then and was totally shocked to see this one in the wrecking yard. The intercooler and engine were still there but the turbo was gone. If the yard was not closing as I walked by, I would have considered buying it from them.

my dad has had dealer licenses since the early 80's
he bought and sold a regular dodge omni to a local mechanic for his daughter to drive

...he always bragged on how tuff it was.
she got a lot of miles out of it.

they are odd looking but must have been built fairly well.
have not thought of those cars in years.

I have heard of these but don't think I've ever seen one in person. They are cool in their own way. My wife would tell me I get hung up on cars like this, as I bought the SRT4 Neon for the same reason. Neon=Not Cool, SRT4 Neon=Cool at least in my head . That being said not sure if I'd want one but would love to drive one.

Have a similar feeling about the Cosworth Chevy Vega, which I have seen in a junk yard in Portland OR, it was mint too, as the yard had fixed it up to sell!

I read this site almost daily, because of my age:

https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/20...-omni-got-can/

Fun fact. AMC built Omni-rizons and K cars for Chyrsler at the Kenosha plant under contract before the plant was closed.

Fleet Fox

storehouse of useless knowledge.

That is pretty cool! Crazy to me that they think that it will go for $40,000-$60,000 at auction!

My buddy here has one, plus had some 80s Shelby Chargers back in high school. His cousin has an 87 Charger still in his garage to this day. They were pretty decent cars back then, but by no means fast.

Part of my postIng pictures process involves using a website to create a link from my google drive. On that website it now says
Quote:
In fact, after 8 years of providing this service, in January 2020 Google started blocking the manner in which we determined if files still existed, causing us to mark countless files as "deleted in Google Drive." As a result, we are no longer able to determine if files are deleted or have become private in Google Drive, so links to any such files will just land visitors at some kind of Google error page henceforth
Great. I thought I had a good reliable posting process. Guess not.

Had a buddy that had one, always bragged about how fast it was. He stopped over one day just as I was bolting the diff cover on my 65 442 have just finished installing a Lincoln locker. I asked him if he wanted to line em up. We lined em up and man was he pissed when the old dinosaur spit sand and crap off the road all over his shiny little crap box. That was in the late 80's, the Olds run 95 MPH in the quarter at the time and made that thing look slow. Yeah it felt quick darting/horsing around but got schooled by a real muscle car. In 2007 that same car (my 65 442) took quickest Olds in Hotrods Dragweek, bought it for 100 bucks in 1980 and still enjoying and drag racing it 40 years later

I loves me some 442 but you are comparing apples (built) and oranges (stock).

In 1986 a stock Omni GLHS would do the quarter in 14.8 seconds:
https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2019/0...urbo-and-glhs/

That's 2 tenths faster than your 442 when it was new/stock:
https://www.musclecarfacts.com/class...42-statistics/

It's also in the same ballpark as a stock base level Corvette that year. it's 1.5 seconds faster than Camaro IROC-Z that year and half a second faster than a Mustang GT.
https://www.automobile-catalog.com/c...overdrive.html

You 442 sounds amazing! You need to post some pics up on here! I am not saying a GLHS is the fastest car our there, but they are unicorns and super impressive for what the are (a FWD Crapbox built in the mid 80's).

You are correct in your figures and the little bugger would embarrass a lot of cars. I was still running it the way I bought it, a stock 70 455 that the PO had overheated so bad it blew the radiator neck off and burned oil so bad it was embarrassing. The old girl could still lay it down though, I dump any kind of oil in it I could find, used oil, bar and chain oil, whatever, and changed the filter about every 5 years. Did nothing but beat on it mercilessly, when I rebuilt it, the block was all cracked up but I could have reused the bearings, they and the crank looked perfect. I had it balanced, did my own porting, cast intake and Q-jet. That was 30 years ago and that mill is still taking a beating, been hitting it with NOS for the last ten years.. 12s @ 110 is where it's at, respectable, not fast by today's standards, but man is it reliable. The GLHS was impressive for what it was for sure. I'll try to post pics, I struggle horribly.
