1989 Grand Wagoneer Question

I'm new to the forum.
Does anyone know if a roof spoiler (Behind the roof rack) available on the 1989 Grand Wagoneer as a dealer installed option?
I'm fairly sure it was not provided by the factory especially on a vehicle equipped with a rear wiper.
Thanks in advance!
Tony

The woodgrain one at the end of the roof? That's fact-O-ry, all da way.

I always thought that it was replaced by the wiper, since you can wipe away dirt and snow that the deflector was there to help keep from happening. But I did notice Ristow has one on the back of his 91' and hadn't seen an 89'-91' with one until his.

My understanding was that when the rear wiper was installed the spoiler went away.
The spoiler was meant to keep the rear window clean.
I'm sure that the factory did not install the spoiler if it was wiper equipped.
I'm trying to figure out if it was a dealer installed option or just a bolt on after-market part.
Thanks!

i have installed a NOS deflector on my 89. it was a genuine AMC part, even had the old dealership sticker etc on the box & the jeep installation instruction sheet inside it too.

i have seen quite a few late model wags (with rear wiper) with these deflectors installed. its been mentioned that this item allows you to drive with the tailgate window down & not suffer the gas fume consequences - & thats enough reason in itself for me to install it....

heck, even modern day cars have today's equivalent - with or without rear wipers.

I think my 91 is orignal. I looked at it and i dont think it was put on by somone. Asked the guy who i bought it from and he said it was on there when he bough it. I still use the rear wiper when going down the freeway it dont devert that much. Will

Can one adjust the angle of the spoiler? Or are they always sorta vertical?

It is fixed or at least mine is. Its amazing how little wind comes in when your doing 65 with the back window open. Wish my 80 had it also.

Thanks for the replies.
The spoiler on the GW that I am possibly buying is exactly the same as the one on Big Willie's (thanks for the picture).
I just want to make sure it's not some POS that a prior owner bought from Pep-Boys and bolted on there.
Big Willie: by any chance can you post a side shot of the spoiler so I can make sure it's the same.
Thanks again!
Tony

here's one on the bay - not the best example, but you can get the idea,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AMC-J...#ht_500wt_1456

the rear side has 3 arms, of which, each are held to the deflector by 2 screws - visible from the front. the arms themselves have another 2 screw holes for the screws that then go down into the roof.

the arms are a very squared off shape wheres the deflector itself is a smoother, rounder sort of finish, additionally, the arms are a duller silver finish, wheres as the surface of the deflector is a brighter shiny chrome. the ends of the deflector each have an additional bracket sections that screw on at the back & give it a chunkier look.

Anyone know what the original part number for this was? I don't see it in the waggy parts catalog.

First thing I do when I drag home a Wag is ditch the spoiler (actually I dump the whole factory rack, but...). The spoilers are gas mileage killers...and we need every 1/2mpg we can squeeze out of these.

BIG WILLIE - seems that yours lifts a little off the roofline under that centre arm, as does mine, - you can see a little bit of that "rubber nut" between the arm & gasket.

i'm going to get some more of those nuts, i think the initial stress has broken the nut/thread away from the rubber....

Thanks to all.
It looks like the deflector/spoiler on the GW I am thinking of buying is an original Jeep acc. and not after-market.
Good new as I hate aftermarket accs.
Thanks again!
