Looking at an 83 Cherokee - Anything special to look out for?

I am working toward getting back into a full size Jeep. I am going to be selling my YJ soon and I am going to replace it with an 80-83 2 door Cherokee. I found one for sale and I am waiting on the seller to send me some good clear pics before I go look at it. I ran the vin through the decoder and it shows its a model 17 wide track with the 360, automatic, and part time 4wd. The seller says it is a Cherokee Chief but I don't see anything on it that says so.

Anything specific I need to pay close attention to with regard to the body, frame (beyond obvious rot), or electrical system?

I am not concerned with the drivetrain as I can fix anything wrong there. I just don't want to do any body or electrical work.

Thanks

I’ll start.

The rear window will probably need some attention. If anything is going bad wether the channels, electrical system(needs upgraded). Motor could need to be replaced. It won’t work and you need it to work to open your tailgate.

Headliner will probably be shot. While your in there you may want to take down the roof brackets and put some sound deadened between the bracket and roof. Mine made a lot of noise because the factory stuff broke down Z&M sells a kit to replace the headliner.

Fresh air intakes might need unplugged at the foot wells. Which can cause rust at the floor pan and fender.

Center arm rest might need repaired and reenforced at the welds inside it.

And that might be just the beginning.

I had to resecure my instrument lens as 2 of them were just laying in there

Last year of the full size Cherokee. My first Full Size was my 83 Narrow Track Cherokee (ex-Gov). It was awesome and it still lives on in my J10. The passenger side door and the 360/727/208 from the Cherokee are in/on the J10. The seats and most of the interior are in Sweden, and various other parts are scattered around the country. The biggest mistake was not taking the manual rear window/tailgate off and selling that. Live and learn.

Look for rust on the floor boards, around the rear flares (front fenders are easy to replace), and make sure the rear window goes up and down. Then, enjoy!!

I'm surprised mine's not the poster child for this,...."Hey, look at that 'ZackN920' guy's Jeep...If it looks like his underneath-run away!!!"

Anyway's,

When you get a vehicle such as these, expect to do at least a little of everything- including BODY and ELECTRICAL. Either that, or pay some overpriced shop to do it for you.

or, just buy a "fully" restored one.

I like to learn how to do the other stuff. Thanks to working on my GW's body and then the Dakota, with how that came out... I'm now tackling the rust problem with my *nice* daily driver-which is the Cherokee. So far, its coming out great and I'm saving $5K doing it myself.

The seller of the 83 flaked out on me so that's a dead end. Luckily I found an early 82 (no disconnect on the front pumpkin) with the 258/4 speed/208 and A/C so I am pursuing that now. Thanks to everyone for their responses.
