Leaf Spring clips

anybody opened the clips around the springs? are they reuseable after opening?
want to clean the springs, give them a new paint and grease for the next 30 years -)))

furthermore, the clamps around the axle to hold the springs, are they too reusable or should i change them?

I do not reuse the U-bolts any good spring shop can make you a new set , the rebound clips will probably not be any good after you get them off . the rubber eye bushings on the mounts is a wear item that is replaced when a re-arch or rebuild is done on leaf springs

When I build a spring pack I like to coat the leaves with this. http://www.permatex.com/products-2/p...-liquid-detail
It helps preserve the spring pack by sealing out moisture in the rust prone center section. I put one coat, allow to dry for a day or two, then put a second coat and assemble.

Torquing the U-bolts properly is not only important for correct tension but also to prevent deformation of the bolt plates. I have removed dozens of axles from FSJ's and I have found about half of them had bent bolt plates. Bent bolt plates are in my oppinion useless. Once they are deformed/bent and then straightened they will re-bend with less force than was required the first time . A bent plate could allow movement in the clamping zone which the springs don't like. I prefer to use my own home made plates.

Don't forget to align the (new) U-bolts carefully while tightening them and retorque the nuts after a few hours of driving.

Markus,

Someone just posted, I think on this board or FSJ network, about replacing the clips and pads in their spring packs. They paid very little for both. Might be worth a search, I read this in the last month.

Hope all is well with you.

I would not grease the leafs.
I good cleaning and some paint.Buy the wear pads if they are on there.

Check with companies that make springs and hardware like Alcan for parts.

Don't reuse the leaf spring clips, they're available and relitivly cheap. look on amazon, you'll need the 2.5 ones.
