what to do what to do?

Ok, Got a 78 Chief on trade, rusty floor boards, roof, tailgate and rear fender flares. Was going to cut the roof off, repair the floors, and flares and make it like the Blazers and Broncos with the soft top. Then eventually turn it into a 2wd lowered hotrod. While looking at soft top options, mostly from Sout II's I stumbled across a old fire truck M715, for not a bad price. Does not run and is sitting in the weeds/bushes, almost can't see if from the road. Without the risk of getting stung by wasps or bit by a snake, I did see that there is some rust on the old girl.

So, do I keep the Chief and stay that course, or, take the drive line(eng, tranny 304/th400 combo, axles d44 set) from the Chief, and some body sheet metal and make a M715 extracab 4 seat convertible?

thoughts?

Why ask someone else, it is what you want and want you want to do that makes you happy.

An M715 convertible two row sounds like a heretic talk. I like it!

Save the Cherokee for a later adventure.

The more I think about it, I would put the M715 body on the Chief frame. Bob/shorten the bed a ton also. I would get rid of everything else from the 715. yea I know sacrilege, but doing a swd WT chief was that too but look at the drag Chief!! that thing is soo cool.

I like your original plan for hotrodding the Chief. There is something
about military vehicles that makes customizing them sacrilege.

What you describe for the rust bucket sounds like something I should
do to the 73 donor. My wife would like to see it move, one way or another.

Ok, lets toss another curve, I just found two J3000s, stepsides long bed? was there two different beds for the stepside back then?

Anyway, both real solid. One is a 67 4x4 the other a 68 2wd. I know the M715 springs are outside the frame rails. What about these two trucks, say, if I swap the drivetrain from the 78 Chief to the 68 which would also include the axles, what issues could I run into? I know most of the FSJ body stuff is real close but not sure about the frames.

thanks again for thoughts.

Talking

I like the idea of soft-topped Chief, especially for Pensacola Beach days! Make the M715 pretty and olive once again...it's the natural state of that truck. Two J3000s now too? Wow!

Sounds like I need to take a trip out to Pensacola next time I'm out east and pick up some fixer-uppers. (Oh yeah, I would need to have a place to store them and work on them...dang reality always crushing my day dreams!).

chubbinius, these finds aren't in Pensacola, they are all within like a 4-6 hr drive, just happen to always take back country roads when I go on my service calls.

The M715 is $2500 firm, its an old firetruck so solid roof, its got some rusty areas and does not run.

the 67 J300 (maybe, they say no vin) is in good shape for its age, not running, has the hurricane straight 6 looks to be solid sheet metal asking $1800 obo.

The 67 2wd J300 no engine or tranny, looks like it might need floorboards, some rear cab corner repair, and some bed repair. Cool patina and he said I can come get it for $700.

soooo

You got these home yet?

Was thinking of you the other day when a buddy said how much he loved those Magnums. I looked at him and said" You know how many Jeep parts you can stuff in one of those?"
