Question Which AMC 360 engines would fit my 1990 GW?

Hello all,

Sadly, last weekend I've blown the engine of my 1990 Grand Wagoneer, so I'm looking for a replacement engine. I've posted a classified on the Dutch Jeep forum for a 360 AMC engine, and so far I've had two responses.

Since I have been offered engines from 1978 and 1979, I'm wondering whether these would fit my car. I know quite a bit about Wagoneers (as in: I've read a lot of forum posts and articles), so I've read that as for engine specs not much has changed over the years since 1978, but I'm not a mechanic.

In short my question is: could I fit a AMC 360 engine from 1978 or newer into my 1990 Grand Wagoneer? I do obviously have a different transmission than some of the older models but I guess that should'nt be a problem.

yes all model 360 amc V8 are the same only difference over the years are the intake and exhaust manifolds

all of em,with the possible exception of the very early ('71-72) engines due to a possible different crank flange.

Hi,

@mattmopar440
I guess that since my exhaust manifolds are still intact, I could re-use those? I'm not sure about the intake manifold though, as the engine has overheated. Is that something to take into consideration if I wanted to keep the original carburettor? I have an LPG system installed so keeping it could be important.

@Ristow
I have looked for remanufactured engines (ofcourse, and it's still an option) and I guess I remember one of the sites mentioning that, but I think engines as old as that will probably have too high a mileage to really consider in my case.

Don't forget to remove the TH400 crank bushing if you get a pre-80 360,
and there might be some accessory bolt size differences that are easy to wok though.

how exactly did you 'blow' your 360? Is there a whole in the block? I feel like with proper maintenance these motors would be impossible to completely destroy. I mean eventually you will start loosing pressure in the cylinders.

Did you run it dry? I.e did your oil pump go and you not notice?
