Wheel Resurfacing

Hey guys, figured this would be the place to post. I'm installing a mild lift, and am most of the way through it. Since I'm almost capable of multi-tasking, I figured I'd send out the wheels for resurfacing at the same time but wanted to know on average how much it cost?

I'm going to give the guys 5 rims, standard wagon wheels in aluminum. Clearcoat is chipped and has some aluminum oxidation. I've seen as cheap as $20/wheel for bead blasting but wanted to see what you guys had done.

5 wheels, need them blasted/resurfaced and clear coated.

Thoughts?

Sometimes it pays just to do it right the first time... If you want more of a factory-look... I've use these folks with success: http://www.wheelcollision.com/index.html

Do the wheelcollision.com wheels come back with a machined finish like OEM or are they smooth?

hmm

I've had good luck with powder coaters & a lot better cost. Wheel companies are OK though. I would at least check to see how they apply the clear coat. The best clear coat is powder coated on any wheel. I had some outlaws II's done by a local powder coater they were awesome.

If you can't make it better why waste your time. No use repeating the orignal mistakes. I'm to old to push it that's why.

We have a local wheel company out of Crofton that has decent reviews. My intent is to swing by and have them give me a quote for the work. They can do full on machining and re-manufacturing.

Just like factory! I'd contact them first for confirmation/photos to be sure they would meet your expectations.

What were you looking at for a price point for a set to be redone?

I reached out to a wheel specialist here in NC and they wanted $200 per rim. I thought that was a bit high. I could order wheels already done for $350 at TGW

Are you excluding wheelcollision.com @ $145/each?

Dang, I managed to miss that the specials rotate every week or so. Just missed a set of wagon wheels that were on special last week. Go figure.

Wheel Collision Center looks like the place to go so far based on the research I did locally.

No I am not excluding them. I reached out to a local shop based on a quick internet search and they said $200 each.

Then I saw on TGW a complete set for $350 and noticed it was a big price difference between the local shop and them.

My rims look good enough right now. I am just getting into the mechanical restoration and want to reserve every $ to make sure it is mechanically sound before going too crazy with the finishing touches...

With this said, I really want the Jeep to shine like yours when I am done.

Here is what my rims look like now:
Not too bad, but no shine either.

I had a set of turbines done by wheel collision. they looked great back in 2007.

My truck lives a pampered like a true prissy should it is not a daily driver by any means. It might have 500 miles put on it in 9 years since getting these wheels from them.
Now the clear powder coating is flaking off in sheets and they will re-coat on my dime at $125 a wheel. and thats under a lifetime warranty. Watch out for their up charges.

Just my 2 cents.

Since I hate a thread without closure, I ended up going with Wheel Collision Services, and love the result. The clearcoat is deep and looks like they'll hold up very well.

There is a slight imperfection on one wheel where it looks like it was corroded beyond what they milled off the surface of the wheel, and one of the wheels was re-drilled and sleeved for the center caps where they didn't originally have holes. No big deal, as I'll be sending back 4 corroded cores with screws that broke off. No malice, I just figured they could do a better job than me in removing and sleeving them.

The service was great, if a little slow. I'd done all my paperwork so that if they took 2 weeks, I'd be insured and on the road. Well, they took closer to 6. Ends up I'm still not ready as now I have a coolant leak somewhere.

Anyhow, without further ado:

Wheel comparison:

Still have to polish up the center caps, but I'm happy with the service of WCS. Would gladly do business with them again.

I used Wheel Collision as well and wheels arrived this week and look great. Very reasonable price and quality work.
