10 bolt front and 14 bolt rear

Im thinking about picking up a set of chevy 3/4 ton axles for my j truck here in the next few days. I dont know wat year there out of but the front is a pass. side drop with lock outs and they have 4:10 gears in them. guy only wants 250 cash for the set so i think its worth it. My question is will i have any issues with the front axles going into my j truck? My jeep is a 78 258 4spd dana 20. Im think im going to need some drive shaft mods both front and rear.

Any help or advice would be great!

Thanks
-Mike

going to get 6 or so inches of lift in the front if your truck is sua so will have to do something for the rear...otherwise its a pretty easy swap....doing a ford swap on mine right now

Im not to up to par on the J-Trucks, but I swapped in a 10B and D60 in my Cherokee... So heres my input

I would count on needing some sort of front driveline work.... I picked up a front shaft from a early 90's or so Dodge 1500 4x4 and had it shortened for a HD D44 that I once had but may need it about 1/2" - 1" shorter for the 10B I just swapped in as the pinion angle is a bit better then the 44... But I still have yet to REALLY see what i'll need done...

The rear you may be able to get away with... When I put in the D60 my stock driveline bolted right up. Not sure how much different the D60 is between the 14B but shouldn't be too much different?? The yoke on the 14B may be different? Altho if its 3/4 ton, you may be good to go... Altho mine is VERY close to the stock gas tank so keep your eye out for that....

I say just go for it! As long as you dont rely on the truck daily, should be able to get it done fairly quick! In-expensive, now thats a different story...

Good Luck!

The whole reason i was going for the axles is that i dont want to spend the 500+ to do SOA and cross over steering on my stock fron axle. I planned on doing SOA and shackle flip with my stock axles but my funds are tight so im doing everything i can to save a little cash.

I still and going to shackle flip the rear to even out the truck. and prolly buy 2in lift springs to give me just a little more too.

I know i good drive shaft shop here in town and they hook me up pretty good so i can get a deal there.

The other thing im wondering is the steering. can i use my stock cross over are or what will i be needing to look at for the steering?

Thanks again guys!!

Well the Chevy axles come already sprung over so no need to modify the perches (unless the width is off, stock on the Cherokees is like 31.5", not sure on the J-Trucks but it is also 31.5" on the 10B). You will need new brake lines, ($100 through Bj's), U bolts and plates (ask the guy to throw in plates if he has them) U bolts will run about $100 or cheaper.

Steering is where it gets spendy... The 10B doesn't have a flat top passenger side knuckle, so you'd have to find one from a D44 and swap over. Then you have to add in the machine work to mill, drill and tap for a high steer arm (unless you have a buddy who machines) Then youd have to get the tubing and TRE's. Like I said, steering is the expensive part... You MIGHT be able to get away with a 4" Drop Pitman Arm but I really doubt it... Especially if you add another 2"... To do it right the first time, you gotta pay... AMHIK......

Minus the settering though, it should be a fairly easy swap! Use the money that you'd potentially be spending on the drivelines for steering parts!

Also, one thing to keep your eye out for is wore out parts on the new axles (Wheel bearings, ball joints, axle u-joints etc.).. Thats where it can get frustrating...

Thanks that what i was wondering on the steering. I was hoping that it would have a flat top already but i might be able to find one hopfully.

Im going to be putting all new u-joints, ball joints, and bearings so i know everything will be new and good.

Im hoping that everything goes off decent and i dont have any expensive secrets that will put me in a bind. Being laid off sucks

Would a 12 bolt or any other axles already have a flat top that is ready for high steer??

Thanks again!!!

From what ive read, no 10 bolt came with flat tops knuckles... Dont quote me, just info i've gathered.... The Dana 44 is the only front end that comes with flat top knuckles (minus the D60 which is a totally different setup) so you're kind of limited for options... Altho, there are many different vehicles and years that have the flat top knuckle, they're a hot commodity these days... Check out http://77cj.littlekeylime.com/web_rs44.html for all the years makes and models for flat top knuckles... Or you can always buy new (but expensive).

You'll be in a pretty good situation if you replace all those "wear" parts off the bat (dont forget the spindle bearings!!) and also, dont forget to pop the diff cover to make sure things look good in there... I understand the money situation, it blows ...

And i dont believe GM ever made a front 12 bolt axle, just the D44, 10 bolt and the D60... The 12 bolt was for the rears, but a good one at that!

Hope tha that helps!!

Got the axles and to my surpise the front locks or "Lock out" i should say. There is only one lock out on the front axle? Im hoping that i didnt get screwed on the front end.

The rear looks to be in good shape just a little surface rust. Both axles were in a running driving truck a year ago the guy said. so all the brakes need redone but that should not be too bad i hope.

Anyone got any info on what is up with only lock out on the front??

Thanks again guys!!!

Just price hubs for a Dana 44....Warn, Superwinch, and a couple others sell them. I got my set from a '73 3/4T Camper special. I also got the 205 but it was behind a TH350, so I'll do something different there.

Nice find...

FWIW - I just picked up a pair of brand spankin new Warn Premiums for a friend for $80 from a local parts store (Car Quest) so it doesn't hurt to shop around

The next best place I found (if i remember) was www.4wheelparts.com at roughly $110 shipped.....

Of course, these are for the Dana 44 too....

Good luck!

Oh ya the brake drums, I've never done them myself (seen it a few times) but if theres isn't any type of bolt holding it on, you just gotta get forceful with it... maybe tap around the out side edges and try wiggling it off... Like I said, haven't done them myself, but as far as I know, they're just on there from the force of the brake shoes...

HTH

You'll need to pull the axle shafts and then the spindle lock nuts (IIRC there are two different versions), then the drums will come off with the hub. If you need new drums or need to get them turned you will need to pound out the studs to seperate the hub and drum.
You'll also need much of this...

Pull the axle shafts, and remove the spindle nuts/bearings. Then pull the hub abd drum off as a unit. If you want to remove the drums from the hub you have to press out the wheel studs.
