5.7 Hemi swap?

I have a chance at a 5.7 Hemi from a 2012 Charger.

Was thinking of putting in my 87 GW. Good idea?

How hard would that be? What would it involve as far as what adapters or other things would have to be modified to do it right?

Thanks

No brainer if your engine is tired/dead; swap. Don't waste your time with a rebuild: you will spend more on a good rebuild than a hemi swap. bkilby did it very well with trans and xfer case but I am sure you could get an adapter and just do the engine if you want. Especially since you have a 727 already, I bet you could get a chrysler patterned 727 and swap some parts and keep the rest of your drive train together.

If going through the expense and effort of installing a modern engine, why not go the extra mile and put a modern transmission in it as well? A 50 year old three speed automatic is going to severely limit whatever engine you go with.

You can go in between on the tranny. Get a A518 from a truck with the 4x4 adapter. You now have a 4 speed auto and bolt a tcase to it. Or just get the 545RFE and move on.

This.

It probably wouldn't be any harder than any other swap if you have the time-money-effort to put into it. You can find plenty of aftermarket support for hemi stuff.

545rfe would be your best bet. 5 speed and it is perfect for the hemi.

The A518 turned into the 46rh which is 5 inches longer than the 46re. The RH will definitely push the T-case back into the gas tank.

545RFE might also push the case back into tank. Someone that has done it will be able to answer that question.

I say go for it. But i'm a sucker for a cool project.

According to my notes, my AMC 360 with the Bull Tear serpentine kit is 1.5" longer than the Hemi/545 combo. I don't recall where though.

Here's some Hemi dimensions if this helps anyone.

So the AMC/3spd is 1.5" longer than the hemi/545 combo.

Wow. I never would have guessed that. It's a no brainer then. Hemi it is.

I do have a 545 in my 03 Durango 4x4, I just might crawl under it and get a measurement. Now I'm curious.

Your 87 Wag should have a drivers drop case and the newer 545 stuff will be drivers also. Sounds easy enough.

When I get back from my weekend away, I will try to remember to crawl under the Wag and Durango and get some dimensions and post them up. Problem is, I got CRS disease and my brain has got a mind of it's own.

I've got 3 66RFE's 4x4 transmissions sitting on a pallet in the shop. I can get dimensions real easy. It's the same case as the 545RFE.

For those that don't know, a 2WD 545RFE can be converted to a 4x4 tranny pretty easily. Unbolt the tail housing and discard the housing and shaft, bolt on 4x4 adapter. No tearing into the tranny like the good ol days.
