Yet another center console thread

So I went ahead and decided to be rid of my busted, mildly dangerous armrest. And I wasn't relishing drilling holes in the tranny hump just to put a cheap cupholder from walmart in securely.

Went to the salvage yard today, and grabbed the center console from a 2001 Chevy Tahoe, complete w/ the connecting piece between the armrest and the dash. Cost me fifty bones, fits like a glove, and I'll probably do some trimming and fabbing to make a better transition from console to dashboard. But so far, I'm all smiles. It's too dark at the moment, but tomorrow I promise I'll post pics.

There's a few inches left between the dash and the console... but its going to make a good place for an amp, and there's a decent spot to relocate the radio. I'll have to move the heater controls too, but I'm not heartbroken about that.

Inside the storage compartment is a place to put documents in the door, high and dry. There's a second compartment farther forward where you can put CDs or whatever... right now I'm using it to hold onto my iPod, which is the only source of music until I install the radio you see in the background there. More pics to follow as progress is made.

I predict a run on Tahoe center consoles that will puzzle wreaking yard operators!

First thing I'm doing is relocating the radio to that console. I'm sick of that hacked up mess preventing me from closing my glovebox, and having to lunge across the dash to make an adjustment. Dangerous.

Maybe I'm just trading one redneck mod for another, but at least it'll be safer and less annoying. And hey, maybe I can do something about that jacked up dash once the radio's out.

Once I'm satisfied that the radio's going to be trouble-free in its new home, I want to build in some more material to mate the console up to the dash, keeping the heater vents' air outside the box and not in. I also want to make a removeable panel on the driver's side where I can access a small amp and a power inverter, with a covered AC plug in the door.

The top shelf is a tad bit tall, and I'll probably steal some material from elsewhere in the front of the console to fix that. So long as I can fit the hardware beneath it, I'll be happy.

Dang I was just thinking about this project the other day, headed down the 'build your own' route. I think I'll be needing to do some more thinking.

Poor image quality, and I flubbed on some of the trimming, but the radio ahs successfully been relocated to the center console. Wiring's been rerouted carefully so as to be well protected from prying eyes AND the heating ducts

Question - it appears the console is in two distinct "halves" and the main part looks like it could do pretty well on it's own. I'm sure there is a hole where the two meet, but would it be difficult to close it off and just run with the main part?

They're distinct pieces. It wouldn't be hard at all to close off the hole on the main part, and in fact it looks like maybe it was designed for that possibility. I'm taking the hard road simply because I wanted to relocate the radio.

78WIDETRACK, so far as comfort goes, it sits higher up than the original, busted one did...probably by two or three inches though I haven't measured. it's actually a little hard on the elbow since I'm used to a padded armrest, but I'm brainstorming a decent solution to that too.

The top of the console is depressed, probably to hold stuff, but it's pretty useless in that regard in my opinion. So that ridge around the top, meant to hold things in, really just makes it a tad uncomfortable. Still... it's an improvement. More comfortable to me; I can sit up straight if I want to rest my arm AND have a hand on the steering wheel.
