Question

Hi Folks,
I bought a set of axles from a 1978 J20 3/4 ton
truck to use in my '79 WT Cherokee. My question
is in regards to the front D44 from the J20.
Where manual locking hubs would be, there are
silver caps sealing the end of the hubs. I assume
this was because the J20 donor truck had an automatic trans with Q-Trac. How do I remove these
silver "caps" and will manual (Warn) hubs for a
D44 bolt in? What are these things called?

Regards,
netbear

Pry the caps off with a screw driver, remove the continuous hub components, install the manual hubs, of your choice.

Whoa, silver caps on a J20 axle, 78? My 76 had drive flanges on it from the factory. Does this have a 8 hole pattern or a 6 hole wheel pattern? I thought the silver caps were only on the 6 hole J10 w/ qtrack. At any rate, yes they will pry off and hubs will install but if they are 8 hole hubs they take a different lockout hub than the silver capped 6 hole hub. J20

The front Dana 44 axle from the J20 is eight lug, big disk brakes, etc.
Any idea which Warn hubs I sould get and will
I need any other parts? (Rear axle from the J20
is a Dana 60, eight lug, big drum brakes.)

All the Dana 44 lockouts are the same weather they are 6 or 8 lug! I just put J20 axles under mine and the lockouts that were on the six lug bolted up to the 8 lug.

No it takes the same hub, it uses the same guts as the 6 hole axles.

Ok, Someone explain to me why my dana 44hd on the front of my 76 J20 had drive flanges instead of silver caps. Also explain why it has 19 spline outer axles and regular chevy/dana 44 hubs/jeep style also, don't fit it? Not being a smart@#, but someone please explain the difference.
