How much Freon (r12) if mine if empty?

Hiya everybody,
Can anyone tell me what is the total capacity if I need to completely recharge my AC? (89 GW)

I do have an EPA cert, so not worried about locating some, just wondering how much I should plan on needing-IF it's empty. I'm going to have it checked out by an AC guy to make sure I don't have any leaks, etc. before I do this. And no, I am not interested in retrofitting!

Thanks!

Thank god some who doesn't Like R-134A to

It will take Just over a Pound of freon to fill the system full or 2-3 small 8oz cans

If you cant find R-12 I recommend the next best thing is HotShot (R-414B) a direct replacement for R-12 no PAG swap. also it's alot cheaper and easier to find due to they can still legal make it in USA

Thanx Matt!

LOL! NO I do not like 134A and I am not gonna go through all the necessary headache to try to convert over. I've seen some master disasters-I got enough to worry about with my rig as it is, and I am not gonna invite any trouble to reside under the hood.

I have my EPA cert and I can easily get it several places-

If I have a leak someplace I intend to get that straightened out first, I'm not in the mood to go through this twice! I haven't used the AC ever-
I turn it on and it blows OK, but its warm.

well have the pressurize it with nitrogen up to max system pressure and check all the fittings for what the cost have them replace both schrader cores there cheap and most leaks start there have them pull it into a 500mic vacuum and if it holds charge it

Annie, do you have a 609 cert? That's what you'll need to have to buy R-12.

The regular cert doesn't cover automotive.

Hi Lindel,
Yup, I sure do. Section 609 MVAC Certification.

IF I have problems with hoses or fittings, where's the best place to go get replacements? (I'm really hoping for no problems there, but if a problem DOES arise, I want to be prepared!)

16 ounce to a pound. You probably used 32. Common mistake since we use ounce for both weight and volume.

Good deal Annie. The price of R-12 has come down a lot in the last couple of years.

Now, if you've got, or have access to a vacuum pump and a bottle of nitrogen, plus a decent micron vacuum gauge, you'll be in good shape.

Lindel, I only know one HVAC guy and he only does residential...so I guess I'll fork over to have it tested. Those aren't items I have sittin' around.

But the way I look at it, that's OK, it'll still cost me a lot less than going through all of that retrofitting stuff...I'm seeing some decent prices-some people who think they have the only can in the world-othesr not so bad...

What's redtek?

Oh believe me, it's the same thing here-I'm in the middle of the Mojave Desert. If anyone thinks they can gouge me on AC work, its out here where I live. (I know, I tried last year for the heck of it, and the lowest "recharge" estimate I got was $339.00 plus tax.) That included nothing but the R-12.

Twice I got the "where's your husband" question, and then when I said I don't need one of those, you could literally see thier eyes light up. (ooh, I can charge the socks offa her!)

These people must think I just fell off of the local turnip truck! ("Oh ma'am that stufff is SO rare, we MIGHT be able to get you enough, but it's going to be X dollars for labor, and then X dollars for the refrigerant.")

All these guys think they're going to charge me $150+ per pound to filler' up? Not in this lifetime...

That's why I just plan to get her tested first, and THEN drag out my own cans.

(Shame on me...NOT!)

Annie, when you get some spare change, a decent vacuum pump is about $300, a micron gauge will run from $50 to $200 and I'm not sure what the going rate is on nitrogen is.

Bottom line, you can get the parts you need to do most of your own work for well under $1000. Might be a lot now, but there will be a time when R-12 gets outrageously expensive again.

It's like a $50 for the tank rental and $15 for the gas that's for the big tanks tho.
