in dash stereo?

Hi guys,

I need a new stereo for the Jeep and am having trouble finding one.

The space between the glove box at the bottom and the spot where the dash curves outward at the top is only 2 1/8" and I am having trouble finding one that will fit in that space.

The Retro sound radio's are nice but too expensive for me.....

Originally I didn't want to cut out the dash and was looking for an older 2 post stereo that would fit in there but that seems impossible.
So I have decided to cut out the dash to slide in a newer radio but can't find one that is short enough in height to fit between the upper curved dash and the glove box.
Any input on what you have done would be appreciated.

Or maybe I will just have to save up for a few months and buy a retro sound radio.

Has anybody here bought a retro sound radio? What are your opinions on it?
I would normally play music off my USB drive so whatever I get would preferably have a USB port.

Get a Retrosound. I've bought three of them over the past ten years and the first one I bought was for my Jeep. They are fantastic radios.

Or wire an auxiliary audio input jack onto your original AM radio.

I had my original AM radio converted but it's not a cheap option.

Crutchfield.com

I just put in my year and make and they provided me a list of all that would fit. They also included the pigtail adapters that fit the original harness.

I am also a fan of RestroSound. You can get knobs that are almost identical to what was used on the 73-85 dashes. These knobs happened to be on the Jeep dealer installed Panasonic in my dear wife's 77 Wagoneer.

The whole point of the Retrosound radio is that you don't have to cut or modify your dash in any way. Somebody, sometime in the future, perhaps yourself, will regret cutting the dash.

Ok, I guess I will just save up for a Retro sound stereo.

The cheap one on ebay is just a little too tall to fit and will require cutting the dash also.

I mainly use a USB with music on it so having that function would be nice.

people here will cut the fenders but cringe at the dash. go figure lol.

i think the retro sound radio looks dumber than a din radio. still has a led display, cant use the factory bezel, still looks like it doesnt belong there.

Buy an old Jeep era radio and have an electronics shop refurb with modern internals like bluetooth.

I don't cut dashes and I sure don't cut fenders either.

The Retrosound pictured in this thread is their older model, which I have in my Jeep. Those are obsolete in their lineup now. Their newer models are styled to more closely to match the OE radios. You can get them in black or chrome face, and change the display color and brightness to match your other dash lights. The newer models, depending on how fancy you go, now have USB and Bluetooth capability. I have a coupe of the newer Retrosound Hermosa radios in some of my other cars. Having Bluetooth is really nice because then I don't have to plug in cords all over the place and I can answer calls over the radio.

Original knobs will fit the Retrosound radios. Retrosound also makes radios specifically to fit 1970's and 1980's Jeeps with the correct knobs and faceplates.

By golly, I wish they made a RistowSound stereo that would fit my 67 Charger. I would chop a vintage dash for some of that.

Yeah, ours is an old one. All our stuff is old dammit. Drive it like you stole it and don't look back.

Im with the dont cut your dash crowd! However id rather stay with full OEM look rather than RetroSound stereos so I hid this bluetooth amp behind my OEM eight track stereo and play all the music I want with increadible sound from my phone:
https://www.crutchfield.com/S-WWCTQb...T4-1000DB.html

There are also several places that will upgrade your current stereo to blue tooth and modern components.

I am not sure if I somehow did this wrong but at Crutchfield I put in my 1977 Jeep Wagoneer, and it showed no results for stereos that would fit. I did try 1984 Grand Wagoneer and it has 15 results and all 15 are Retro Sound

Does anyone have currently a Retro Sound in there Wagon recently?

in exploring my rust bucket the happiest thing i found was when i removed the crappy ~90's digital radio the dash hadn't been cut. put me in the don't cut the dash crowd as well.

i found a jeep am radio on ebay after watching for six months for 75 bucks (after drooling at the cb/am/fm radios), which was within my budget. i'm planning on running an amp under the passenger seat which has bluetooth and running everything through my phone, so the radio is mostly for aesthetics.

prior to that i was going to go retrosound, they seemed like the most reputable manufacturers out there who were making something close to what i was looking for. they even have face plates that make the radio look more retro:

https://www.retromanufacturing.com/c...een-protectors

the fellow who runs jeeprecyclers.com just got a huge influx of inventory. he's quite knowledgeable and every interaction i've had with him leads me to believe that he's a stand up fellow who cares a lot about getting you what you need.

i wouldn't bother searching through what's posted on his website, i'd just click on the 'email us' button at the top of his page and tell him what you are looking for. his name is Adam McDaniel.

rang-a-stang also recommended to me to post in the wanted section of this website. someone might be sitting on a radio that they'd let you have on the cheap.
