Lousie has started smoking, rather suddenly. Had the oil changed and a lube (Too cold here for us whimps), used 10-40, added a small can of stp (low oil preasure-noisy lifters), drove away. 2 days later, in the AM after a cold evening (10 degrees f), I started her up and she started blowing a fairly huge cloud of oil smoke. It countiued until she warmed up, gradually decreasing. I checked the oil and it seemd to be overfilled about 1 qt. I drained off 1 qt, all was well, no more noticable smoke in the Am for 3-4 days. This AM, same deal all over again, although not as bad, still smokey. Now Louise has NOT smoked ever, passed smog about 8 months ago just fine etc. etc. She drips oil, but is a non-smoker, till now. IDeas? PCV valve? STP causing the motor to gum up? Oil change place started her up dry? Nerves?

I'd just go back to 10-30, or 15-40 and forget the STP. Could be valve seals, or the overfill pumped the air cleaner and such full of oil. Or it just doesn't like the new brand of oil.
10-40 is a huge viscosity spread.

Hey, thanks guys, I had thought stem seals, although the typical sign, smoking when starting in the AM seemed to last a shorter period, and this did come on suddenly.

I think I will go to 10-30, no stp, maybe use the BG oil additive that everyone raves about to loosen up the lifter.

One note, it seems that if I drive it until it warms up, doinhg errands etc, then park overnight, it does not smoke. It only does it if I start it cold, in the evening, drive a short distance and back, then parki over night. This would lead me to think seals.
