tips for removing gear shift knob

I have a nice used gear shift knob
I want to install on 1976 j-10

the original is cracked
but will not budge using only my hand,...

is it best to use channel locks,
grab onto the end and twist ?

or does anyone have a better way to get the old one off ?

Automatic or manual both shifter knobs look to be just threaded onto the shifter in the 76 Parts Manual on Oljeep.com

I think if you give it a spray with some penetrant it might loosen up for you to twist it off by hand (let it soak in overnight). If the one on it is broken and the penetrant doesn't break it free, you'd likely be okay trying the channel locks/pliers. Good luck

I didn't even think he could have been talking about an auto shift knob haha.
In that case, the auto shift knobs are just a tight slip fit, no threads. All of mine I could just pull off by hand. Most of them were so loose they would fall off in your hand when you went to shift.
