I am going on a year almost trouble free. Sometimes it gets caught and I have to pull it down about an inch and then it works on its own awhile. It took me 10 years to fix it, as there where other things on list of proirities.

Mine doesn't go down unless you wiggle the key back and forth and it will eventually catch...going up is no problem but I have to back it off a little once it gets closed or the switch stays engaged and will drain the battery in about an hour....

The 86 works flawlessly. the 90 is another story. Requires periodic encouragement.

Mine did. The switch was bad so I wired a switch under the seat. The the wire broke so I got a manual crank.

Strangely, mine works amazingly well. About the only part that does. Now, all I have to do is figure out where in the world the wiring for the rear defroster disappeared into....

Mine has worked flawlessly ever since I found the flaw: the wiring harness that connects to the switch in the tailgate.

I hear about lot of people with "intermittent" problems, and I suspect they're having the same problem I had. The switch has prongs (six if I remember correctly) that plug into a plastic harness with wiring and connectors inside. The connectors basically crimp onto the prongs, but they eventually loose their "crimpness" and go limp, so they don't grab onto the prong and don't make contact. You just need to open up that plastic thing and re-crimp them so they're tight against the prongs. May as well lube them up with dielectric grease.

I also eliminated the stupid safety switch and have never lost my glass.

In terms of speed, the window also benefits from an increase in system power. Mine has worked much better since upgrading to a CS144 alternator.

On again, Off again...FIXED!!!

The ones I've dealt with, a 76 Wag, 78 Wag, 81 Cherokee Laredo, and 85 Wag all had similar "British" electrical problems. I ended up parting out or junking all of the rigs except the 81 Cher, I tried three motors and two key switches before I found the problem. Now I only have the dash switch that runs the taigate glass. read on to find out more.

This is what I found in my 81 Cherokee - the tailgate key switch is kinda like a relay - if power isn't going through it, the dash switch won't work either. If power went to the key switch (and it did work for a while) the dash switch still wouldn't work sometimes. So I used a DeWalt battery to run the glass down so I could lower the tailgate, and I then removed the glass and pulled the tailgate keyswitch out, running the wires from the dash switch directly to the motor and voila. the arms moved . I soldered the wires, fixed a few things, reinstalled the glass and now it works.

Both of the keyswitches I had, had broken inside and there was no possible way for contact to be made, allowing current to flow. Two of the three motors had internal damage and were locked up.

I also had to weld the "pegs" on the scissor arms to fill grooves made by years of use - that alone aided the window speed.

I also welded a piece of 1/2"x1/2" square tubing across the inside top edge of the tailgate just inside the rear glass to reinforce the tailgate. It kept cracking in the middle, above the inside release latch. No probs now.

Tries to work.............at times................

Motor runs just fine, sounds powerful but the glass goes nowhere. Makes a ratcheting sound so I assume it's the flex track that's broken. Before the window movement quit, it would go down but not up.

I'll add that the window channel itself needs replacing as do the wipes.

Now my Suburban switches ALWAYS worked, both dash and at the window. Seems we should be able to do a retrofit.

Hey, just sayin'.............

The PO of my Jeep had a Rambler with the electric tailgate and it used the same mechanics as the Jeep one. He said that tailgate was so problematic that he ordered my Jeep with a manual tailgate. The Rambler was only 7 years old at the time.
