CA AB 210 (changes minumum smog year from 76 to 83) GET INVOLED, Links here

Today I read this (basically says what I am about to say, CA is thinking about changing the minimum smog year from 1976 to 1983):
http://www.superchevy.com/news/1902-...pre-1983-cars/

Then I looked at the wording changes in the actual bill here (all they did was change the year from 1976 to 1983):
http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/fa...201920200AB210

Lastly I wrote my Rep and asked them to support this! It makes perfect sense and would help keep a lot of vintage steel on the road. It would allow us to run modern EFI, computer controlled timing, etc. on our older rigs.
If you want to write your rep start here:
http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/

Both my reps had webpages that had an electronic email form to fill out to contact them. It does not take much more than 10 minutes to hit them both up.

Here is what I wrote to my Rep and assembly member:
Quote:
Hello Assemblywoman NAME,

I appreciate you reading my letter. I am writing in support of California Assembly Bill 210 (An act to amend Section 44011 of the Health and Safety Code, relating to vehicular air pollution). This bill changes the minimum year for vehicles requiring smog checks from 1976 to 1983.
These vehicles make up a tiny fraction of the vehicles on the road in California so the number of impacted vehicles are negligible but those vehicles are extremely important to those of us that have them. California is known for our vintage vehicle and custom car culture but every year many desirable vehicles in those years are destroyed, sold out of state, or parted out because it is difficult and expensive to find replacement parts that meet the strict California CARB requirements that would allow those vehicles to remain in compliance with our laws. Since these vehicles are still running and driving, it is often because of the extra time and effort we take to maintain them in tip top shape and they are therefore as efficient as they ever were, even after 40 years of service.
Also, our vehicles were designed in 40 years ago and the anti-smog technology of those times are often obsolete or just not effective. Often times we are not allowed to fit more modern equipment such as fuel injection, computer controlled timing and exhaust gas re-circulation (EGR) systems that would greatly decrease the amount of pollutants our vehicles emit because the process of finding that equipment with a CARB EO number can be cost prohibitive or impossible. This means we are forced to leave our vehicles in a well maintained, but ineffective smog configuration.

By exempting the vehicles from the bi-annual smog checks, it will allow us to fit newer, more modern, more efficient parts to our vehicles and continue to enjoy them for years to come!

I hope you will support AB 210! Thank you for your consideration.

Very Respectfully,
Marc Schatmeier

Haha, definitely, Wiley-Moe! Rang, I dropped a note to both my Assemblyman and State Senator. That would definitely open up the number of vehicles to pick from!

Email is definitely a way to go, but certified mail speaks volumes more. It's a lot harder to ignore certified letters than emails. If you really want to make an impact, print something out and head to the post office. It's more work, but also way more valuable.

Awesome idea, I fully support this. Just change the date to 1991 and we'll all be happy Or at the very least, exempt cars past a certain age from the visual check and just measure tailpipe emissions.

i can assure you,California most certainly is NOT thinking of changing the smog year. this is a go nowhere bill from an assemblyman. CA is waging war on all things carbon.

here is a more realistic view of whats ahead.

https://www.ccjdigital.com/dirty-diesel-bill-in-california-senate-would-phase-out-diesel-trucks-by-2050/?utm_source=daily&utm_medium=email&utm_content=03-15-2019&utm_campaign=Commercial%20Carrier%20Journal&u st_id=b94ff44898b11e3e76ae0945bebffb27&utm_term=ne wsletter-2-daily-position-top-story

while its aimed more at trucks note the mention of the intent of speeding up the state’s transition to cleaner fuels, including zero-emission vehicles.

I bought my Jeep just before the now-defunct rolling exemption law took effect, which meant that the seller was responsible for smogging it before transferring the title. The only way they could get it to pass was to smog it as a Ferrari V12.....

Sadly I doubt this will make it past committee.
CA politicians HATE cars/trucks/trains.
Especially older vehicles. Bills like this have already come and gone.
What amazes me is the fact they haven't tried to hike the cutoff year higher.

While it's a big pita if maintained/tuned properly any older one will zip right through testing. I could sure live happier w/o visual inspection crap though!

x2. Allow me to sidetrack just a bit.

None of you NEED a car. Just bike yourself to the bullet train station on a 90 degree day when you're 40+ years old. You need to go where public transportation takes you, not the other way around. Sheesh, get with the program, comrades...if that's too much work for you, there are "retirement" camps happy to accommodate you.

Slightly related: on a serious note, though, personal vehicles are a huge hindrance to the overpopulation takeover. You might not believe the Agenda 21 conspiracy nonsense, but after seeing hundreds of these "pack n' stacks" popping up all over the place (most of them do NOT provide parking, either!), I urge everyone to please give it a deeper look.

I don't disagree with anything written in here! I do hope common sense will prevail (though, I doubt it). IMHO, you cannot complain about the process if you don't participate in it. Yes, I think it's a waste of time to write my reps for the exact reasons Mike and Tony mention, but I am going to try anyway.

Nothing wrong with trying! Without going political ALL individuals should take an active role. Some bills that have passed recently are CRAZY and 99% folks are clueless.

I really wish someone would drop a bill getting rid of visual inspection on older vehicles and just test emissions @ tailpipe.
Or try to amend/modify the existing laws that says a collector car can skip visual. Problem with that one is the insurance/registration nonsense.

Would benefit sooo many CA aftermarket companies...jobs & money blah blah.
Easier to get something like that passed!

Problem with trying to sell a bill like this is older cars DO pollute more regardless of how small a % it is.
The car haters have their cliff notes from CARB and know all vehicles are bad.

Grrrr... thats not an analysis report, its an opinion piece. Almost no hard facts. Looks like it was written by a high schooler that hates old cars.

This bill was just too similar to the previous one that died.
