    Yet another 6bt swap...

Well I picked up my 1996 5.9l on the 28th of April and will begin tinkering with it to figure out what was done to it already...
    plans are to:
    1. Adjust timing from 12.5 degrees to 16-16.5 degrees.
    2. KDP fix if it hasn?t been done already
    3. 3k GSK
    4. A #100 fuel plate and adjustments
    5. Replace HX35 with my modified HE351

All those mods are free, yes, free because I either have what is needed or can make it easily...
What I would like to do is replace the head gasket and get some arp headstuds along with +60lb valve springs but the cost is getting a little out of control. $600 more for headstuds, gasket and springs...

But either way, I will post more as I get stuff done...

Ok here are some pics of the motor and my cs144 mounted up...

And after i made a new bracket and modified the stock.

Ignore the huge stack of washers, It was just temporary until I could get some longer/shorter bolts from the hardware store.

I pulled the front cover yesterday to check the dowel pin and sure enough it had a tab over it already (awesome) and checked the timing. I just used the pin method and it comes in between 16-17 degrees advanced instead of the stock 12.5 on the tag. Someone has worked on this motor and did some performance mods to it prior to me purchasing it.

Next, onto the injection pump AFC and fuel plate mods. I will also check to see if it has any kind of GSK installed and will double check the valve springs to see if they are stock or upgraded.

Fix the pics? They are showing up when i pull them up. Do they not show or show broken links? Ok, they should be fixed

Also, I pulled the AFC and sure enough some work has been done... It has a 4k GSK installed, and the fuel plate has been removed, which I was not hoping for... If anyone has a stock fuel plate they dont need, I want to grind a custom profile into it.

I only see the dashes also but they are still HUGE. Well, a huge bland space with a small dash in the middle.

Well what the heck. Im using google photos and didnt have any issues before this... I will dig deeper...

On another note, I got a new fan clutch for a 1996 5.9 cummins (stock replacement) and a fan from an H1 military hummer, AM General part number 5939560. its a 20" 10 blade plastic fan vs the factory 7 blade stamped steel one. It bolted right on and didnt have clearance issues either.

Edit: Ok I think I figured it out.... Are they showing up now? If they are, I also resized them a bit to make them fit pages better.

Here are pics of the fan, fan and clutch bolted up...

If you plan on putting it into a Jeep I wouldn't count on using that fan. I had to use a electric fan set up. There wasn't enough room behind the radiator to fit the stock fan.

Indeed it is going into a '74 j20 mated to an nv4500/np205, same truck in my sig. I will not be intercooling it at this time as i need it up and running ASAP, but dont panic, I will use an air/water setup so the exchanger wont be nearly as large as an air/air. I will move my radiator forward as well if needed.

I wont be needing the external oil cooler so that leaves me 2.5" of space between the grill and radiator right now.

I have 37" from the firewall to the radiator and the motor with the fan clutch measures about 34" so thats 3" of space I have. It will be tight, but I will get it in there...

On another note, I got the bellhousing kit from AA today as well!

Instead of using the dodge slave cylinder with that plastic retainer and pin with no bleeder, I found a GM slave that should work (from a 1985 S10 with a diesel), that has a bleeder and uses a metric bubble flare. It wont directly bolt in, but I can elongate the oles in the slave or redrill new ones on the bellhousing to make it work. The dodge slave is a 1" bore and the dodge master is a 7/8" bore... The CJ master is a 13/16" bore (so it *should* work with the dodge slave) and the slave I found is a 15/16" bore. Do the math, the hydraulic advantage of the dodge setup is .875:1, the CJ with GM slave is .866:1, that is a 1% difference.

Just make sure when you position the engine on the frame you move it back far enough for the front of the oil pan to clear the front sway bar and still clear the firewall. It's tight, mine clears the sway bar with only about an inch to spare. I also lowered the sway bar a couple of inches with spacers because I have a two inch lift.

Mine is all dodge, including the radiator. I found a pair of 16" electric fans that each move 2500 c.f. air. In the 6 months I've been driving it, I think they have turned on maybe 6 times. The system is very efficient and it doesn't sound like an airplane...

Sway bar won’t be an issue because mine never had one. My ‘79 Cherokee parts rig did, but the 76 j20 parts rig and my 74 doesn’t even have the brackets for it. I’m also running about 11-12” lift and the 6.5 optimizer oil pan has well over 8” of clearance.
I’m seriously thinking about doing a 2” body lift to gain a little height in the engine bay so the 5.9 doesn’t hang as low... but we will see how well it fits...

Jaber, what radiator did you use and how did you make it fit? I’m using a summit universal aluminum radiator and it was just enough (with the 21” duramax fan and custom shroud) to cool my 6.5. It should be adequate to cool the 5.9. If needed, I can cut the front support mounts to widen them and put in a wider radiator...
And for the fans, I was reading a lot of info about many setups and either the Taurus fan or contour fan should work, but I will attempt to use the mechanical clutch setup. The fan can’t and won’t come close to the radiator, but the clutch may being it sticks past the fan about an inch.

I am still saving up for a clutch kit (last part I need) and will be renting a 10x30 storage unit to move my truck into to work on it since the apartment manager is such a ....... .....
