A little riddle for everyone....

So, when I finally got the 401 assembled and wiring half done, I was so excited I started it up before putting trans fluid in. When I had the engine out, I replaced the front Torque converter seal, pulled the modulator to check it, and pulled the shift shaft to replace the seal. I only ran the engine for about 1 minute.

When I had everything buttoned up and all the fluids topped up, I started it for the second time. Warmed it up and checked trans fluid, all looked good.

So I jumped in and put in in reverse. Nothing.
Put it in drive. Nothing.
L2 and L1. Nothing!
Back to reverse, nothing! Chief won't move an inch!

Went to put it in park and it was grinding. Had to shut it off to get into park.

I have it working now. I'll give a big thumbs up to the first one to correctly guess the problem.

Ha! I can see the look on your face when you had your "moment of clarity" and realized that!

to all!

Oh sure. It's easy to figure out when you're sitting on your couch.

I was so convinced I screwed something up with the shift shaft that I pulled the pan. Didn't find anything wrong. Scratched my head and quit for the night. Next day the lightbulb went on. I classify it as paranoid tunnel vision after a long day in the shop.

It was a pretty good feeling when I got it back together and it moves just fine!

The exact same thing happened to me. Just had my nice and shinny new QT installed, brakes completely redone (master cylander to rear drums) drove almost a mile to the first traffic light which turned yellow to close for comfort, no worries new brakes, slammed them pretty hard with no skid. My nice, safe, quiet ride was going great until the light turned green. Nothing. Turns out in my panic my right foot hit the high-low lever. Scarey scarey. I thought the old TH400 bought the farm!
