The rear axle on my 87 J20 tends to leak differential fluid out of the wheel hubs. When I took it apart I was surprised to discover there are no inner axle seals around the axle shaft inside the pumpkin like on other axles I've worked on. This allows the differential fluid to travel down the axle shaft housing and dump into the outer wheel hubs. Is this normal? It mixes with the wheel bearing grease and leaks out. I've found some diagrams for the axle and it looks like there never were any seal in the axle tube, the only seal it shows is an wheel bearing seal on the back of the wheel hub.

Uh, those outer axle bearings are live lube from the center. No axle grease. If your seals on the inner part of the hub are bad...a) they are bad or b) the inner edge(seal surface) of the hub is bad.

x2. that is normal for a full-floating axle like most rear dana 60s (no axle seals in the differential). The gear oil also lubricates the wheel bearings. If oil is escaping down the hub then inspect and most likely replace the wheel seals as necessary.

X3. This is what led to that wheel hub video I just made.

Are the gaskets for the axles available anywhere? When I did the brakes on my J20, I bought some Ford D60 gaskets and they are different. The originals are aluminum or some other metal, and I reused them with some RTV. No leaks, but new would be better.

Still puzzles me to see folks run around in circles trying to find unobtanium. Dana 60 has been around fir 60-70 years.
