Like Thomas said, as long as the Wagoneer is not a celebrity-quality example, a straight across trade for the J-truck is a no-brainer, at least IMO. J-trucks in good condition are scarce. The 258 and automatic (TF999 I believe) will be rather pokey though. Good swap material, IMO.

Welcome. Nice jtruck. Sounds like you have a solid plan. I'm on the side of keep the six and go for a stroker if you really want to do something under the hood!

my 98 xj has 245k and i still daily drive it on 31's and 4.5" of lift. i figured it was time to start building another vehicle because my xj doesn't show signs of quitting any time soon...if the motor grenades itself i'm going to use the 258 parts from the j10 to build a stroker. hopefully i'll have diesel swap done on the j10 by then

pulled the j10 into my storage/workshop area today.

                    game on....

its going to need a carb rebuild and a full tune up. got some money right now, so i'll be getting some parts soon! cant wait.

the shop floor is going to be wet tomorrow...

Be sure to clear out those idle tubes in the venturi cluster. it will make a world of difference on the carb and idling/running in general.

yeah...you want us to send it your way???

i about fell on my face 3 or 4 times pushing it into the shop with my brother. its a little heavier than the xj.

i usually go to napa for xj parts, so im headed there tonight to pick up a carb kit, tune up parts and some other stuff. it appears that new floats only run about 5-10 bucks so i think i might pick one up as well. i just need to get her running right so i can move it without killing myself on the ice! then i am going to start to dismantle bit by bit

                              no turning back now

and for someone who is not well versed in 80's engines...what exactly does this guy do? obviously its supposed to have a belt connected to it, but currently it does not.

Good luck with the rebuild. Let me know if you've got any questions. also, be sure to put a little lubricant of some kind on the accelerator pump diaphragm before reinstallation, otherwise you'll be pulling it all apart again to put in a new pump. I learned that the hard way.

As for the belt driven component, judging on its location, since it doesn't look much like mine, i'd say thats the smog pump. You can verify that by looking on the back for a fairly thick hose leading to a diverter valve on the opposite side of the valve cover.
