Unhappy

I have an '89 GW with about 78k on it. As far as I can tell it is completly stock with no overhauls of any kind done. Have only had it a few weeks so I am not sure of its history. It is originally from Colorado and has the high altitude stuff on it.
It starts great when cold. When the engine is warm, it turns over for about five seconds before cranking, then I may get a backfire or two, black smoke from the tailpipe, stumbles a bit and a couple seconds later everythings great. Any ideas?

I had the same problem which turned out to be a bad choke pull-off. Don't know if it's the same for your Jeep since mine is alot older. I'm sure someone who knows more will post something to help you out.

Check the float level in the carb, it might be set to high and it's flooding the engine.

Is there any way to check the float level without removing the carb and flipping it upside down? Maybe a dumb question but worth asking.
