In Today's News . . .

More boring progress . . .

BUT - it all needs to get done.
Fit several hours in on Sat and Sun between other stuff.. family and wife.

Continued to remove everything from the interior. Getting to bare bones
Don't have a final pic, but got the rest of the carpet, belts and driver seat out along with the stereo stuff...

Stereo? Seems like an easy upgrade...
I did mine a few years ago and now had to remove it all.

There are a LOT of components and wiring when you do a proper sound system!! 6 speakers, baffles, crossovers, head unit, small amp, sub with separate amp, controls, pre-amp wires...
LOTs of wires and stuff. Organized, labeled, then put it in a box.

Day is done.. at least it was warm today in Michigan. Still runs...

Any suggestions on "how" to clean up all the old glue on the floors? The carpet was glued down and that stuff does NOT want to come off!

Dumb Me

Beautiful progress! Still kicking myself in the butt for trading my '81 Cherokee W/T. 6 cyl, auto, black on black and a "muscle grille" to boot. It was just like the one in that famous Jeep ad and it was in good shape but had developed a miss and a ticking with every miss. Lived in an apartment complex that would allow some repairs done but not tearing down the engine. Miss it.

It's looking like a gutted machine. Not much further until you're ready to drop it off. For the glue, not sure. Wire wheel maybe? Have you tried acetone or similar?

Hi Brad! Getting there...

Like my new driver seat? It's a little high though !!

Here's a pic of my attempt at cleaning the goop off with paint thinner..
Sort of works, but a LOT of elbow grease.
Again, it looks like rust, but that's all the glue residue. I think somebody had the carpet out and re-glued it down. UGH.

After wiping a local area down, this is what it looks like. Going to be a lot of work yet. You can tell where I stopped...

More Details . . .

Note the high tech shop here ...

Just a guy and his tight garage. You too can do this at home !

Removed "Ronald" with the rear bumper...
Each part marked up where it came from...

Then onto the front... Grill off.

Then onto the front bumper, side markers, and turn signals...

Funny, it took me a DAY to get these bumpers sort of aligned .... 30 minutes to remove. Hmmm . . .

Literally have run out of parts to remove !!

Now need to sort and organize this pile.

Now it's basically cleanup and gunk removal. hope to get it to the paint shop in little over a week.. ( or so - ish )

More floor clean up. This stuff will NOT come off ! ?

I now HATE carpet glue..

Enough !!!

I am done with cleanup .. I give up. All empty and ready to go.

More gifts from the rust gods... Driver side holes...

Now, none of these holes were showing.
I take a punch and hammer to find the weak areas.
If I am putting this much time/money/effort into a paint job, I want solid metal when done.

The driver rear area has a lot of perforations... Dang it
I am marking the spots I want repaired by the body guy.
Might as well get what I want ....

Next Up . . .

The last step today was to wash the Jeep.

On the inside!

Made a soapy bucket and scrubbed the floor with brush.
Then I took a small sponge and washed the inner fender wells as best I could.

Man, there was a grimey mess inside the recesses of the fenders, lower quarters, etc.

Funny, no water stayed in the Jeep? plenty of "Drain Holes" !

Now, my friends make fun of me.. say I am "OCD".
Too organized ??
NOT possible !!

I needed to organize the chaos of the removed parts.
I bagged and tagged all of them when removed... BUT - just stacked them up on a table.
UNACCEPTABLE ! lol.

I went to Costco and bought one of these stainless racks on wheels...
Easy enough to put together.
I plan to review and put the hardware with the correct parts.. organized by interior and exterior.

It will be MONTHS before I get the Jeep back, and I might have trouble remembering what goes where.
This will pay off big time later.

OK.. now I can relax a bit... All parts reviewed and organized

It's the little stuff ...

Some assembly required ....

In Today's News . . .

Last prep before taking the Chero to the paint/body guy.

Note all the wires... It still runs, But:
While I have taped up all the connector ends, there will be a LOT of dust/overspray/dirt in the next 6 months.

In an effort to protect the bulkhead connector and wires, I taped them off as best I could.
Then, I added some plastic over everything.
This is a carpet shield product that clings to itself.
This should add some protection during the paint work.

So - "That's a Wrap" .. as they say. It's ready to go!

Sure is a lot of work isn't it? It'll be nice when it's done though! You got 6 months to figure out how to put that puzzle back together.

Jeep - B - Gone ...

Today the SJ was delivered to the paint and body guy.

Of course, it rained a bit as we left.

Tailgater !

Went over the Jeep with the body guy. At least it cleared up a bit when we got there.

Discussed the various items I want addressed, color strategy, and the parts I brought along... [ ie patch panels, etc ]

Lots to be done, and this is ONE of his current projects.

Posts will now slow down for a bit . . .

This will be the last I see of this thing in person for about 6 months give or take.

Probably for the best, boring everybody with my details...

I have been scouring for a picture like this. Needed to see the ceiling cross supports. Of the three one is different not having the cross strips that hold the wire. My body shop guys put them in the wrong order (blank one in the rear). Thanks for sharing and looking good!

So the paint process begins...

I got ONE picture from the shop - Called them.
I guess they took the doors off and started the front end disassembly.

They had a question about some bondo and extra holes in the doors...
Told them to weld all the holes up. I don't know which are original or added.
Some later mirrors were fitted previously.
I will decide what mirrors to use when it comes time.

[IMG][/IMG]

Of course, I want to see MORE pictures.. but ... at least they started on it.
Target completion date I "asked" for is mid May 2022.

The clock has begun ...

Just a question for you,
Did you think about the adhesive body sealer around the wide track fenders and all nooks and crannies of the body sheet metal?

Is the shop going to put the adhesive sealer one after primer and before final painting?

On my 79 and a 78 I parted out, there were 4 factory holes in the door for the mirror. The central quarter sized hole is where the remote mirror cable passes through, the next smaller hole forward was/is for a rivet that holds/held the plate under the door skin in place, then the hole all the way forward was for a screw and the small hole aft of the quarter sized hole is also for a screw. Not that it matters really, but there you go.

We talked about the seam sealer...
They plan to remove the old, and replace it with new .. same a production.

As for painting procedure, I am not exactly sure of the steps?
However, fully trust the guy. He has painted many award winning vehicles.

So, these holes look "stock" to you ?

There is a reinforcement on the back side of the door skin.

Are you going back with the CHIEF stock look? decals etc... or will you go with a custom look. Your paint color choice will look great no matter what.

I'm looking forward to next spring! Thanks for the updates.

" Stock-ish "

Not a stock Jeep, so let's have some fun !

Kind of a hybrid graphic set up ... I like parts of a few schemes.

This is a rough cut of what I am shooting for.
Uses some of the side blackouts with the Southwest pattern.
Note the pattern stops at the back and does not wrap around the tailgate.
I have never thought that pattern looked finished at the corners.

I like the "billboard" graphic on the tailgate. So keeping that.

This is what my last one looked like at the rear.

However, I am not keeping any color at the rear corner pillar like this one had. the blackout will come further down like the stock blackout treatment.

I am "patiently" waiting on more progress pics . . NOT !
