Model 17 is the wide track, the wider axles and big fender flares, 2 door only. S package is a trim package, fancier interior with a 'southwestern' design print on it, and a southwestern design decal wrapping around the exterior. Also comes with an 'Indian Head' badge that says Cherokee S applied behind the side rear windows (or on the front fender for 4 door Cherokees). Just for looks is all, but it looks nice.

Not always a wide track.

The model 17 "S" could be a narrow or wide track, and could have the Cherokee Chief label, or just "S".

The major differences with a model 17 over a 16 are: chrome bumpers, chrome windshield trim, the rear flipper windows, body striping, interior garnishments, aluminum or wagon wheels, and a fender or rear pillar emblem, either a rectangular S or a round indian head.

Overall, it's a trim package

What's interesting is even on a model 16, you can still get the optional drivetrain, including the 401, and all the comfprt goodies like CC and tilt wheel.

1979 brochure descriptions:

Cherokee "S" Package. Includes Custom Vinyl Bucket Seats; Center Armrest & Cushion; Driver's Folding Seat Back; Passenger Assist Handle; Interior Pillar Covers (4 door); Engine Turned Instrument Cluster Overlay; Custom Door & Rear Quarter Trim Panels, Color-Keyed Carpeting & Carpeted Wheelhouse Covers; Rear Seat Ash Trays; Soft Feel Sports Steering Wheel; Body Side and Taligate Tape Stripe; Bright Trim in Rear Quarter Window (2 door); Flipper Quarter Window (2 door); "S" Medallions Inside & Out; 15"x7" Aluminum Wheels (4)

Cherokee Chief Package. Includes most of the interior features of the "S" Package. On exterior, Unique Body Two-Tone Paint in Low Gloss Black replaces tape striping; "Cherokee Cheif" Lettering on Lower Body Sides and Tailgate; Bright Drip and Rear Roof Moldings; 10x15 Outline White Letter "Tracker A-T" Tires, White Styled Steel Wheels & Flared Fenders replace the wheel/tire offering in the "S" Package. (Chief Package available on wide-wheeled model only.)

It was my impression the model 16, 17 & 18 was the model # applied to 2 door narrow track, 2 door wide track & 4 door narrow track Cherokee bodies. I could be wrong about that.

model 16 (1974-1983) was the base 2 door narrow track body, could be ordered with the "s" package.

maodel 17 (late 1975-1983) was the 2 door wide wheel package, could be ordered with the "S" , golden eagle, chief, laredo packages.

model 18 (1977-1983) was the 4 door narrow wheel package, could be ordered in laredo, chief, "s" packages.

I don't feel like getting up and going out to the Jeep, but I'm pretty sure my '79 TSM describes the different models as Skeletor just said. I know it said Model 17 was the wide track, it had captioned pictures of each.

No, no, no. I think it changed, so it really depends on what year you are talking about. My '74 is a Model 17 'S', but it is narrow track (there were no wide tracks that first year.) On the VIN identification page in my 1974 TSM, 'S' is listed next to Model 17 only. I don't know if this is true for '75 as well.

ok heres is why there is confusion, in 1974 the base model was model 16, the "s" package was model 17, but when the widetrack models came out in 1975, model 17 became the widetrack model and model 16 was relegated to the narrow track 2 door cherokees.

That makes sense. AMC changed everything in oddball ways, so this is to be expected. So far as I know, in '79 at least, Model 17 denotes a Widetrack model.

I think it's fine to to talk in detail within the context of this forum but details often get forgotten or confusing. What I think is important to remember is the fact that the Chief is a trim package not a model or body style and the Indian head emblem does not indicate a Chief trim package. Chrysler or Diamler or whoever els owns Jeep isn't going to carry on the legacy of the Cherokee Chief (and all FSJ's) it's up to us. I already have people refering to my Wagoneer as a Cherokee, I certainly wouldn't like to hear it called a Hummer thirty years from now, Dan.

I should have clarified that you could only get a model 17 narrow track in '74 and early '75 . Sorry .

This brings up another observation. I've only seen the rectangular "S" emblems on narrow track 17's. All the wide tracks seem to always have the indian head.

I have dealer sales brochures from 1974 75',77,78,79 and 1980 and although I have never actually seen a rectangular "S" emblem they are evident in the pictures in the 1974 brochure only. All other brochures show the Indian head emblem.

Good point, the Jeep model numbers are typically designating the body style. The trim packages are The S package, Chief Package, Golden Eagle and later the Laredo. There was a base package that was the very basic Cherokee. Most of those were sold for fleet business and government use. And AMC gave us a wild goose chase in 74. We stripped a 74 Cherokee a few years ago. I don't recall seeing rectangular S badges. Please show us.

Needless to say, since they were used only in '74 and early '75, they are tough to find. I can post a pic later today after I get back from my Sunday family outing .

Are they 4-door models? The only n/t Cherokee Chief made was a 4-door.
