Can't find D44 272 ring/pinion anywhere.. help?
The '91 wag is up on the lift at my mechanic. He is striking out EVERYwhere trying to source (any condition) Ring and Pinion gears and ring carrier. Does anyone make or stock these anymore? I've spent about an hour looking online myself. Will call some of the west coast diff suppliers once they open for the day.
If this is a fools errand trying to source... what would be a good alternative course of action/swap? It's a street rig. I'm new at this-- be gentle!

Did you call Randy's? https://www.ringpinion.com/
If not available new, Either Jake's or Montana Overland might have a used axle for you. Presuming you need gears for the rear axle - I believe 2.72 gears from a front axle will work as well, and a front axle might be easier to find.

Not seeing that ratio either. It would seem the cas break is at about 3:54 though. The case/carrier should be available.

With that gearing it must do 0-60 in next year. Maybe it is time to re-gear to a more available ratio maybe 3:31. you should get the transfer case speedo gearing from the same vehicle.

I have 3.31's with 35" tires, which is the same as a stock 2.72 rig. Yes, it's a PIG from a stop, but it will cruise at 75 real nice.
To the original poster, I know it's a lot more money but re-gearing both axles to 3.31's may be your only option.

Thanks everyone.
Mechanic tried to do a refurb on the 272 ring/pinion and carrier, but has determined it just won't line up and work, even for a few years/gentle cruising like he previously thought.
His email:
"bad news on the rear gears , I put a lot of time into trying to get them to mesh well enough to last you enough time to save for different gears but it didn't work out , the charge on my attempt to save the gears will be comparatively minimal , I think we just need to get her done right and have it over with by changing both gear sets , guessing about 3 to 4,000 for both diffs depending on what the inside of the front diff looks like and including repairing the rust damage and wear on your rear ring carrier side bearing surface , spider gear mating surfaces and axles"
Seems pretty damn steep. Not to mention he is planning on charging me for his failed attempt (which was his recommendation.. I initially asked about regearing with something we could find in stock b/c the 272s couldn't be found).
Kinda at a loss. Any thoughts/recommendations?
Thanks friends.

FYI as others have mentioned 3.31 is commonly available. Thats the stock ratio for Grand Wagoneers that came with a factory tow package, which I would venture to guess the majority of them did. You will turn about 450 RPMs faster at 65 MPH but you will have an effective 21% increase in torque at all times. You will probably get about the same milage around town but maybe a slight decrease on the highway.
Not sure what tires you're running now but if you go to anything larger than stock you will be very glad to have 3.31s. If you're running big tires or don't care about highway driving, you can go up to 3.73 with the stock carriers.
