Impressive work, but dang that thing looked straight and cancer-free before you started.. Hate to see such a clean rig chopped up.

Thanks Brutus. It actually wasn't as difficult as I had originally envisioned. A plasma cutter was nice to have during the project.

That is very nice work, but I have noticed every major chop cut and exocage or dovetail starts out as a very nice daily driver. Then I start with a piece of AMC swiss cheese and make a decent Sunday afternoon trail rig.

What can I say? It looked good from far, but it was far from good, if you know what I mean. After the first dent, it was all downhill. I didn't buy the truck to mall crawl. The truck had been rear-ended and had internal rust, so it wasn't perfect. I do feel kinda bad, but I don't think I'd do it too different if I had a second chance.
There are other clean J10s out there to be had for cheap. This truck fell into my lap and it was the right price. I didn't care if it was beat or not. I just happened to get a decent one. J10s aren't that rare.

Well, I did this a few months ago, but I never updated it. Thought some of you might be interested.
Basically, I was tired of my short, under geared trans/tcase set up. I tried to kill two birds with one stone by picking up an adapter to run an NP241D and ramp my crawl ratio up to about 90:1 and lengthen my front driveshaft.
Goodies...
Time to pull my trans....once again. Using a cherry picker is my preferred method. I can pull the trans in less than an hour now. Haha.
Holy crap! I never realized the stock splines were this gnarly!
Here is the new mainshaft next to the old one. 23 spline kit from Novak.
Diggin in...
If anyone wants to do this, I have a list of do's and don'ts. Getting the gears and sychros off of the mainshaft was kind of a PITA. Eaton stlye snap rings are really tough.
All done.
So now I have a Jeep 6 bolt tcase pattern with a 23 spline output/input. I could bolt up an Atlas or a NP231 or NP208D if I wanted. After lots of research, I decided to look for the elusive NP241D out of late 80s, early 90s Dodge 4wd truck. These tcases are not to be confused with NP241DHDs and NP241DLDs. The crawl ratio is awesome. No more jamming the shift lever into my Dana 20. This thing shifts like a dream.

In the very first post when you said it "got a simple 4" lift and 37's" can you go into detail about that for me..... I find myself following exactly in your shoes on my rig.
I figured you had just gotten 4" lift springs, but then I saw the extended shackles.....
I also didn't know you could do 37's with no trimming and a 4" lift...
I am going with a 6" lift and will be using 37's.... Just need some extra info
Thanks!
Beautiful truck btw, love the dovetail.

Thanks!
First off, forgive me for me terrible memory. I am pretty sure this is how it broke down when I was on 37s.
- 3 in Rough Country lift
- BJ's 1 in lift shackles for the front
- 3 in lift block in the rear
- Stock front and rear driveshafts
- Cragar Soft 8 17in rims with 4.25 backspacing
- 37x12.50 17R BFG mud terrains
- Slightly trimmed fenders... I took off about 1 inch of the lip.
- BJ's dropped pitman arm
I think that's about it?
It worked fine IIRC. I had 4.10s and the rear was welded. I hope that helps. It was fun a simple back then.

i'm running 37's as of now but i do have enough room for 39.5's. I did a 4" suspension, 3" body, 2" lift blocks and a set of rear chevy shackles to get the front evened out and it rides nice and has a good stance. i am eventually going to slide some 6" springs under it.

Thought I'd bring this thread back to life. I bought this J truck from Scott (onesunj10) back in August and have been steady going through everything. The last time the truck had ran before I bought it was 2009. A poorly designed cross member had put too much strain on the transfer case and cracked it. Scott wound up getting a good deal on a SASed 4runner and this truck was put on the back burner. I picked up the truck for $3000, seemed like a fair price to me considering is has 1-ton axles.
After a lot of thought I decided to just take the transfer case apart and tig weld the crack back together. So far it seems to be holding. I also redesigned the cross member to catch the Novak adapter instead of bolting directly to the tcase. I used a GM transmission mount for dampening.
There was no way I was going to be able to smog this truck in California (can't pass the visual with a Holley Truck Avenger and HEI even if it makes the truck run WAYYYY better) so I just green stickered it (off-road only). I have a tow rig, so it's not a big deal, just wish I could drive it around town.
I got to drive it for the first time last weekend at Hungry Valley. It was a blast for the short time it was running. The coil in the distributor went bad. Davis Unified Ignition was a great when it comes to customer service. I highly recommend them.
The current project is caging the truck. We're using 1.75" .120 wall DOM tubing. Here's a few pictures of the progress...

Spent a little time on the J10 on Wednesday since Cal Poly had the day off school.
There is about 1/4" of space between the cross bars and the sheet metal. We're trying to keep everything as tight as possible.
Who says chop saw notching is difficult?
Clearancing the floor to drop the front and burn them in!
