Well second time is a charm right? That was a lot of damage. Stay with the high zinc and phos oils and not additives in regular modern oil if you can. I am sure you are on it. I too think it is very cool your son is there helping. Most of my friends kids know that the engine is there somewhere, probably up front? It's pretty sad I think. Your son will be able to fix his own things later.
Looking forward to the post where it is running great and it is behind you.

It certainly looks good. I hope you have better luck this time around and it purrrs like a kitten for a very long time. It is surely frustrating to have these things happen but when it is all done and we get to enjoy the things we have done, it make it all the better.

I completely agree! I am young ish, and can't believe how much money ive saved being able to do my own car work. I just saved myself a $1300 bill doing my own brakes, inner tie rod, and rear hub on the wifes SUV.

Much respect getting back after it Full Size Jeeper! As others said it really sucks to get as close to done as you did and have an issue like this. AND to be teaching your son how to work on engines is awesome!

Engine is back in. Just chipping away at it a little at a time. Would love to have it running for Saturday, but I don't think that is going to happen.

Gorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous!

Other than the cam/ lifters, did you change anything else? Do you still have straight pipes?

What brand/model cam and lifters did you wipe out? I couldn't find that info when I went back.

Hey pickledtoast, I have a similar cam and the same lifters but they are very noisy. Went to another forum and the amc folks recommend against using comp cams lifters.

It's been awhile, I'am working on the Wagoneer, my sons Miata and my school bus at the same time so this makes for very slow progress. The dash is permanently in and came out really nice. I used some mic stand parts to make a mount for the Holley sniper touch screen.

A friend of mine came over Thursday evening to help me get the engine running. Ran it for about 20 minutes, and all went well. Today, my son helped me dial in the timing and make some adjustments on the fuel injection. It starts runs and drives. I live in A neighborhood that has a lot of gulf carts, and ATV's running around. Only one way in and out, so very little traffic. I put about five miles on it today in my hood.
