I used to have an 87 Subaru wagon. Thing was great - FWD normally, 4WD locked in the rears, and had a real 4LO...all with an honest to god shift lever. Thing went anywhere, 'specially since it came from the factory with skidplates.

leila; for a general rule of thumb; trucks and SUVs are almost always rear wheel drive when not in 4WD. Subaru's and some of the newer cute-utes are an exception, but I'm still not sure if those are SUVs or cars, really.

As for the dude with the Dodge Avenger; maybe he got it mixed up with a Stealth (?). That's RWD, right?

Subaru's w/manual are full-time 50/50 split. Subaru w/auto are 90/10 F/R with a viscous transfer that will split up to 50/50.

Rule of thumb for the others is to look at what the SUV was based on. Truck based SUV's (Yukon, Exploder, Durango) are RWD, while car or mini-van based units (Ford Escape, Volve, Audi, Buick) are mostly like the Subaru automatic units; All-Wheel Drive with an emphasis on the front wheels.

I love looking under the car based SUV's at all the crap hanging underneath. Next time you see a Ford Escape, look at the rear suspension. It looks like its hanging 6-8" under the body. How'd you like to catch that on a rock?

Stealth = FWD and AWD as option; Dodge's last rear wheel drive sports car was the Challenger unless you want to include the Volare LOL

You'd be surprised how many people still put weight in the trunk for traction in their FWD cars. When I worked at a cement block company in KY, every time it snowed someone would buy some blocks for weight, and yes I did put them in the trunks of FWD cars. I thought it was funny...

A woman I worked with a long time ago swore up and down that she brought her Nissan truck into her mechanic and he 'converted' it to front wheel drive for her.....poor lady, she got ripped off! I tried to tell her that was impossible, but she tore into me screaming so I just shrugged and went on my way.....

... You better be guarding you front axle… The Nissan boys are now converting from IFS to SFA set-ups D44Fs are among the favorites. Here is a quote…

“I have a friend that builds up Jeeps regularly (I was unaware of that until yesterday) He has a welder, a plasma cutter, time on his hands, tons of experience, and the desire to do a SAS on a Nissan. After talking with my wife, and figuring out that a SAS would actually be cheaper since there will be no labor cost, we are going that route. We are planning on going with dual 6-lug D44s on leafs with 4.88's. And he said he could probably get me a screaming deal on lockers.”

This is just one of many... a 1998 Frontier

Good Luck .. CUL.. ds..
