Whoops . . . That's Not Good !

Returned from vacation week.. and time to pick up the Cherokee from the exhaust shop.
Wife drove me 40 miles to pick it up.. Dog riding shotgun.

Well, this pic says it all . . .

[IMG][/IMG]

8 miles into the 40 mile drive home ... and .. Uh Oh. Losing power.
Strange, it has never even had a burp in previous runs?
Wife saw a small puff of smoke from the new tailpipe.

And it is losing speed... dive to the shoulder right after the exit as it's a bit wider. Nothin worse than breaking down on a 4 lane expressway with traffice flying by at 80 mph.

Quick underhood check up.. nothing. Cranks, no start ?? No fault codes.
Try a battery reset - NOPE.
At this point, I am worried about the family sitting on the side of the expressway.. decide to leave it and get them to a safe spot.

Phone a friend: Who has a truck and trailer. Ask for Jeep rescue.
He says come and get it. So I drive home, go buy a come along to get it on the trailer and head out...
I refused to let him come as his kid would have had to come. Again, not safe on the side of an expressway.

Phone-A-Friend part 2 .. Get a grown Jeep buddy to come with. And we are off.
While I am doing all this, I keep thinking about what could have happened ??
In the back of my mind, it felt like it ran out of gas? So I bring some fuel as well.

We arrive back at the Jeep 2 hours later.. and it still won't start. Still no fault codes on the reader. Hmm.
So I add some gas.. crank.. crank.. nope.
So we talk about getting it on the trailer.. and I crank it some more - and it fired up. Oh Crap-O-La.. Really?

After all that I ran out of gas??
I had put 10 gallons in and didn't think 40 some miles would not have used it up? I guess my test drives used more than I thought ?
Of course, the NEW fuel sending unit does not work - just pegs at full.. the new sending unit is bad.
I am speculating the shop ran it some maybe? idk.

Buddy followed me to the gas station and then home just in case.
This was an embarrassing and frustrating day. UGH.

And that's ALL I have to say about that.

Maybe this lead to some of the fuel going away?

I'll take a bruised ego over an expensive broken part(s) any day! I got super nervous when you said "Wife saw a small puff of smoke from the new tailpipe." I thought you were going to say something catastrophic!

How's the new exhaust sound/look? You happy with how it came out? You said you were building this for an epic road trip coming up; how was the first few miles of cruising before you ran out of gas? Is it going to be a nice epic road trip?

Da Chief

Glad all ended up going well. Had to laugh though, thought these things only happen to me (HaHa).

I was driving my rig just after buying it from Oregon to California. Picked it up from the airport, fueled at the first station and . Broke down on the highway right near Mt. Shasta. Got towed and added more fuel at the gas station while Jeep was still on the truck. Did this just as a check before going to a mechanic because the fuel filter was empty. AAAAAnnnnddddd, it worked. I asked the tow truck driver to drop me off there.

In Oregon the law requires gas attendants. I was cursing to myself about the girl not filling it all the way. When she stopped at 2 gallons I questioned her and she tried filling it more but nothing. Turns out there was an auxiliary tank and it was not set up correctly. Only if you new it would you keep forcing gas into it until there was counter pressure allowing it to fill.

So, it happens, at least you're all safe.

Nope - You are not alone . . . Thx for the good thoughts.

LOL - Bruised indeed... I am indeed embarrassed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now onto the exhaust.

It's 403 stainless, so it will outlast the Jeep most likely.
I went with a basic set up, 2 1/2" pipes with a Borla muffler. Nothing fancy.

Here is the driver side mini catalyst that was on the Yukon. He wrapped it with a heat shield material banded in place.

[IMG][/IMG]

Pass side cat ... you can see the bands and shielding better here.
And it not as close to the prop as it looks !

[IMG][/IMG]

Here is the "Y" pipe set up. Note, I was able to go over the x-member on the driver side and get a nice flowing pipe.
He used a hydra-formed "Y" junction pipe. No welds.
Also note, there are clamps so the system can be serviced if need be.

[IMG][/IMG]

Here is the rear tailpipe... Pipe is on the outside of the shock so the spare tire will fit and have plenty of clearance.

[IMG][/IMG]

Simple exit tailpipe. I asked him to keep it a little short - Just in case it ends up off road some day. Don't want it crushed or bent up.

[IMG][/IMG]

Sound:
It is very quiet.. almost too much so. When I am stopped at a stoplight, the engine is so smooth and quiet at idle I was wondering if it had stalled.

BUT - when you are into the throttle, it has a nice throaty sound, but not loud or obnoxious.

I also had them weld up the engine mounts as suggested by Novak.

Dang sexy there skippy. Except that crooked muffler. Lol. Just curious, and you don't have to say here, but is running stainless exhaust a lot higher than steel? What's next on the agenda?

Crooked muffler? You mean the extra clearance for the prop and various rocks? LOL

Stainless is more expensive . . . But - it will last and never rust.

Took a long drive today after work.. cranked out about 25 miles of various conditions. No issues. Filled the tank!! LOL.
The all new fill hoses have helped, but still temperamental when filling the tank.

I am really impressed with the drivability. Found it all to easy to spin the 33" tires? Uh oh.. that could get expensive!
Great power, healthy sounds. I love it so far.

As for what's next.. Hmm. Work on a few details on the cold air intake, fix the damn sending unit [pissed !], need to add the valve cover breathers, correct the speedo gear, then drive it and work out the bugs.
EDIT: Finish the AC system.

After that? Might go back to my original thread to continue the build up next year.
What do you think? Continue my build here, or pick it up in the original thread?

I did this thread specifically for the LT engine so others could find and use the info.

In Today's News . . .

More test driving today.. 20 miles, in traffic. Lots of looks, a couple of comments.

90 degrees. Drove pretty hard. Temps? Never exceed 206. Good. Fan and rad seem up to the task !

Fixed a minor oil leak.. It appears I didn't properly tighten the oil sending unit. Ooops.

Seems to run great! { WITH Gas that is }

In Today's News . . .

So.. have been racking up some miles.. now 500 trouble free miles. Seems I can move onto "other" issues...

Have a few engine related clean up things to do, but i am just about at the point of calling the engine swap "COMPLETE".

The one big item is AC line fabrication and install. But that should be straight forward.. [ lol - now I've jinxed it! ]

Here's the wife at the 500 mile mark.. Her comment is "This Jeep is bouncy"

[IMG][/IMG]

Now, notice how shiny it is?
I took some time and buffed the paint out...
You can see the haze.. then look at the line where it gets shiny.
The front of the hood is buffed, the rear not yet...

And this is a Cars and Coffee Jeep day at a local place.. First showing out in public since the LT swap.

[IMG][/IMG]

The Chief emblem was faded out pretty badly .. so I did an quick touch up. This was on the vehicle.. but will redo properly it when I paint the Jeep.
Note - I added some red to the headdress.. Thoughts ?

[IMG][/IMG]

At this point - I think this thread will only be updated for the engine swap items... Will start the other items on my original thread I started on this Jeep 5 years ago. More traffic on the General page.
