The old wood chisel is called a socket chisel, it had a hollow end like that, the handle had a wood pin that went inside of the opening, and the shoulder of the wood fit against the beveled end. It spread the force of the mallet hitting the handle and kept the wood handle from splitting as quickly. Most people would just bang the steel when the handle broke, so that is why it is battered.
