    84 Grand Wagoneer Revival

    Hey FSJ Peeps,

New to owning an FSJ, and brought home my first recently -

    1984 Grand Wagoneer
Been sitting for about 10 years, in the AZ desert on a dirt storage lot, so plenty of work to do

401 ci (said to have only 2000 miles since rebuild)

    Auto

4 inch lift with high arch springs

Not a woody (think it was one of the '84's that wood trim was opted out that year)

All mechanicals look like it was just parked some 10 yrs or so back, then not driven again.

Starting with verifying what I actually have, get some electric to it and see if I can roll the windows up tight, go through the treasure trove of other parts and paperwork that came with it.

Looking forward to getting "Pig" revived and back on the road.
    '81 CJ5 Base, 258 I6, MC2100, T176 4 spd, 300 TC, D30 Front NT, 3.31, 2-Piece AMC 20 rear NT, 3.31, 4" high arc spring lift

    '84 Grand Wagoneer, 401 V8 (.030 over), MC2150 HA Comp, 727 auto, Selec-trac NP229, AMC 20 REAR - D44 FRONT - WT 3.31, 4" high arc spring lift

Rather be driving, than waiting to be modified

        More pics

Body is decent enough, tires are shot, interior needs tons of work, and engine is hopeful!

              Ok....down to fixin.

Re-attached battery NEG cable from top of A/C compressor case to Passenger side engine mount bracket, to try and avoid electrical gremlins from the git! (no pic)

Dropped fuel tank to clean and service, making sure everything ready to feed engine when ready to fire up.

In line existing fuel pump - soaking to see if it will work again

Dropping skid plate/tank - had to remove rear driveshaft off rear yoke for clearance

Tank in skid plate just after drop

Very nice. What does the emblem say on the right rear quarter, can't make it out?

It is the "Grand" emblem. Same on both sides.

Some think it was put there on the factory line....others think it was put there by one of the PO's when overspray of the paint was done some years back.

I searched for emblem placement mix ups, but found nothing to indicate it happened during factory assembly.

The 4 wheel drive emblem is supposed to be on the back corners, and "Grand" over Wagoneer on side of front fenders.

Some day I will get them back where they should be.

Your truck is AWESOME!!!! I especially dig the really old school looking MSD 6A!

What is that mounted on top of your A/C compressor? Fuel Filter? What are your plans after you get it running?

Yes that was the PO's bypass fuel filter.....mounted backwards, and return capped off.

Have since removed it, as it was fed from drivers side frame hard line from fuel pump, with rubber fuel line all the way from frame up to the filter. Hose was cooked bad!

I intend to replace the rubber line that was on the engine, with a hard line routed away from heat sources, and only connected to hard line on frame with short rubber line between, then rubber connect to new filter up top.

Not sure I will use bypass yet, but will identify it and hard line parallel with feed line it back down to frame. If I want to activate it just a simple rubber hose connection needed.

My CJ5 I use the bypass filter with mechanical pump, full open bypass, with no vapor lock issues running 1-2 mph on trails in 4 low crawl and 114*+ heat out here.

Intent for Wagoneer ultimate use.....road and light trails. No off road hill or rock climbs, but able if needed. Have the CJ5 for that.

Replace using our '07 2wd Dakota V6 pulling our current camper 16' Scamp (my dads). Dakota does just ok
                        Wagoneer boasts a 401 ci, auto + 4x4
Wagoneer can pull more camper should we upgrade some day
Wagoneer is more comfort for my wife for longer light trails. CJ5 is too rough for her physically, and I want to take her out on trails in comfort.
I like the room to haul stuff in the truck covered and protected
I can keep up in interstate traffic on any grade road. That pull up to the Rim through Payson is a bugger with the Dakota.
Want it reliable to go when and where I want, and get home

Ok, a little progress, a few more pics, and a little disappointment :/

Washed out the fuel tank, and my-my-my the crud that washed out. Used de-greaser with hot water, and color of the washout was like mustard mixed with a little barbecue sauce.......nasty, but much better now.
Sorry no pics of that process.

Took fuel sending unit apart, cleaned with some carb cleaner and soft brush, and actually have OHM readings now.
(NOTE - To open this up, TAKE LOTS OF PICS FIRST, then see the 3 metal tabs and little wire by the arm, on second pic. Little wire unhooks at the top, then can be removed. Gently bend the 3 tabs back with pliers, only till cover with part # is free from base. Do the cleaning and check for operation before re-assembly. If good, re-assemble and check again to be sure of operation.)

When I first took it out of the tank, action on moving the arm was smooth, with no readings. Now you can feel the little arm inside bump over each little wire on the resistor plate. Will calibrate before putting tank all back together and re-install. Want to know where "E" is
Cleaned up the float, sock, float arm, and tank vents with same de-greaser.

                            Ok, now for disappointment

Existing carb - pulled the top off and filled bowl. Looked good inside

Spray bottle of gas....a little down the throat of the carb

Cranked engine over and found some weak links on solenoid connections. Cleaned and re-assembled and starter was faster

                            No start

Checked wiring and connections through coil, distributor, and back to MSD-6A.

No hot side coming through on coil

No power from ignition "ON" to MSD-6A (per troubleshooting guide on MSD data sheets)

Got late so will start back checking "IGN" side to feed MSD-6A, and see if good connection, or perhaps MSD is shot.

                            More to follow
