Greg was able to remove the pan by just hanging the y pipe down which is how I would have done it (if I still had one with a y pipe). so having the exhaust out of the way would be nice it is not necessary to remove it to complete this just undo the manifold to pipe nuts and drop the exhaust down as far as possible. One note to add is when you go to tap out the old portion of the seal from the block there is a steel reinforcment imbedded in the seal and it is the end of that you need to tap on not on the rubber portion of the seal. Also really oil up the new seal half before attempting to install it and as you rotate the seal half into the block apply gentle pressure on the seal against the crank to help it go in easier and not deform or peel the rubber.
