Need confirmation on a transmission

A friend of mine has an '83 Cherokee with a 258 six and an auto trans. As I recall, the trans is a 727, but I wonder if someone might confirm this.

Does anyone know if an HEI distributor is smog-legal in California? That is, assuming the smog guy doesn't realize it isn't stock, will it effect the sniffer test?
