The 84 front axel went bad on the prior owner, so he had the front driveline removed and disconnected the front axel.
Drove it just as a 2wd for 5 years...

He had his rear rebuilt a while back which solved the problem, but he's wheeled hard for a couple...

1) Someone could have put a different axel in... like I'm doing to my 84'.
2) Or just converted the axel they have to manual hubs. check to see if it has the vacumn actuator.

get a wagoneer with a good motor, bad trans or transfer case for cheep.
swap the motor into yours and then have the time to rebuild the origional...
