An early motor will not work with the later regulator.
If you want to upgrade you need the regulator assembly AND motor from a late model.
Very easy to see...

late '89-'91 used worm gear regulators
used set is likely only option you'll need window motors too.
they're direct bolt-in but you'll need swap window motor wiring connector as your 86 is different.

I would guess that is what you may have installed?

When the dash indicators are on usually indicates a wiring issue.
They are grounded via the housing unlike late models with dedicated ground wires.
Try a ground jumper wire and go from there.
